Meet some of our amazing instructors & Staff!
Jeff Greekas has been training in martial arts for almost 25 years. He started learning martial arts in the Edmonton area with some of the best and really enjoyed his local journey for two decades. He was able to travel to train with different instructors in serval countries throughout Asia. However, it wasn’t until in 2009 he travelled to Torrance, California, and visited the Gracie Academy Headquarter, that his path was truly redirected. Once he met Rener Gracie and experienced the unique training culture of the Gracie Academy - it was over; he was immediately hooked and committed to bringing the Gracie Academy training experience back to his hometown. He became officially certified to teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 2011 and has not stopped ever since. Frequently traveling all over North America, to assist Rener and/or Ryron Gracie with various training seminars and special forces training, Jeff is able to ensure that Edmonton Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is truly representative of the original Helio style Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. His successes parallel his student’s successes and wholistic growth in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and you will experience this fist hand with his teaching style. He is fascinated with instructing and is always looking for the most efficient way to pass the art on to his students. Jeff is very proud of his dedicated instructors and team at Edmonton Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, including many students that have been on the mats with him since 2011.
Nathan Walters is a husband, father and lifetime martial artist. His martial arts journey started at the early age of four, where he was deeply amerced, for just under a decade, in the competitive Olympic sport of Judo. In 2012, Nathan came back to martial arts embarking on his jiu-jitsu journey at Edmonton Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (EGJJ) under head instructor Jeff Greekas. While training under Jeff, and also earning his blue belt within a short period, Nathan came to discover his passion for motivating and developing the martial artist in others. Nathan earned his instructor certification under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Instructor Certification Program in 2015; a fully immersive undertaking where candidates from around the world are rigorously trained and assessed to earn the privilege to teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. A year following program graduation (2016), Nathan was graded his instructor bars directly by Rener and Ryron Gracie. December of 2016, Nathan was promoted to purple belt by Jeff and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy instructor, Alex Stewart. Also at this time, Nathan achieved blue belt stripe two (BBS 2) certification, enabling him to teach extensively from the Master Cycle curriculum. When Nathan is not living and breathing all things Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, he also finds himself on the mats working towards his brown belt in Judo.
Andrea Johnston discovered Gracie Jiu Jitsu when she enrolled her 2 sons in the BullyProof program. After seeing her boys learn techniques to “neutralize and negotiate” with bullies she attended and completed the Women Empowered Program earning her Pink Belt. Intrigued by the art, Andrea continued her Jiu Jitsu journey in the Combatives program working her way to Master Cycle where she received a purple belt. Further challenging herself, Andrea became a certified instructor thru the Gracie Academy for: BullyProof, Women Empowered, and Combatives. Training regularly, Andrea appreciates the leverage-based techniques and details of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Andrea is passionate about empowering people and values the safe, positive, and cooperative learning environment provided by Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
